Bookbinding Techniques and Projects

by Josep Cambras

The ancient art and craft of bookbinding fulfills both practical and aesthetic functions. A book’s binding protects its pages and print while also embellishing the volume’s exterior, sometimes transforming an otherwise ordinary book into a true work of art.

This how-to manual presents a detailed introduction to the processes and techniques of bookbinding. After opening with a review of bookbinding’s history, the author describes the most commonly used bookbinder’s tools and materials–many of them specific to the bookbinding craft and available at art supply stores. Next, he explains the procedures involved in producing a book. They include sewing and gluing, as well as paper folding, cutting, decorating, and coloring techniques.

Specific practical instruction follows with 17 profusely illustrated, step-by-step bookbinding projects designed to develop a beginning bookbinder’s abilities. In addition to creating standard cloth or leather book covers and bindings, the projects include a deluxe photo album, a scrapbook, a document case, a stationery box, a pencil case, a picture frame, a slipcase to hold one or more books, and others. Book lovers who follow the author’s clear, illustrated instructions will develop their skills as knowledgeable and proficient bookbinders. Color photo illustrations on every page.

The Archaeology of Medieval Bookbinding

by J. A. Szirmai

Studies of the history of bookbinding are often mainly concerned with the exterior decoration. This volume focuses attention primarily on the physical aspects of the binding and its construction principles. It is an expanded version of a series of lectures delivered by the author while Visiting Professor at the University of Amsterdam in 1987, supplemented with the results of ten years of intensive research in major libraries on the continent, the UK and USA.

The book surveys the evolution of binding structures from the introduction of the codex 2000 years ago to the close of the Middle Ages.

  • Part One reviews the scanty physical evidence from the Mediterranean heritage, the early Coptic, Islamic and Ethiopian binding structures and their interrelation with those of the Byzantine realm.
  • Part Two features a detailed analysis of Western binding structures, distinguishing the Carolingian, Romanesque and gothic wooden-board bindings as the main typological entities; their structure and function is compared with those of contemporary limp bindings.

by Kenneth Lavender, revised by Artemis Bonadea

Here is everything you need to know about book repair–with updated resources that make a trusted guide even more useful. Libraries of all types have books that need to be repaired or conserved, especially in light of budget restrictions that may prohibit purchasing replacements. Limited funds also mean that this activity is increasingly handled in-house.

Fortunately, there is a comprehensive source to which you can turn with all your questions. Covering both basic book repair techniques and sound preservation practices, this practical, step-by-step manual offers illustrated sections on cleaning, mending, hinge and spine repair, strengthening paperbacks, and more.

Other topics include: wet and water-damaged books; mold and mildew; repair of book linings and pamphlet bindings; using acid-free materials to repair damaged books; lining paper objects; affordable repair tools and supplies, and much more. A full discussion of when and how to make repairs is provided, as is a discussion of alternative conservation practices that will enable each librarian to develop procedures appropriate to his or her library.

Throughout the book, more than 110 detailed diagrams, photographs, and drawings illustrate each repair technique. Previous editions of Kenneth Lavender s Book Repair: A How-To-Do-It Manual have firmly established this as the go-to reference.
